For HTTPS and not HTTP

We are setting up TFS 2013 for the first time, and I am finding the infamous Git network prompt for username and password credentials. I am trying to run the utility, but it does not seem to have the desired effect. Mind you, we are also setting up for an HTTP and not an HTTPS connection. It's possible we need to setup our server for HTTPS? Possible, but more of an IT headache.

Thank you...

Failing the HTTPS use case, I can add a credential manually, but then how do I connect the dots with Git? I'm guessing, by setting the credentials.helper config to the configured name? I could be wrong though.
